About Josh RouseJosh Rouse is a copy editor, writer and designer at the Topeka Capital-Journal in Topeka, Kan. He is an outdoors enthusiast and has worked for several local publications, including seveneightfive Magazine and the Washburn Review, a student-run newspaper at Washburn University.
Rouse's interest in journalism was sparked in high school, where he began his journey as the assistant sports editor for the Seaman High School Clipper during his junior year. He became sports editor his senior year and went on to win First Place in Newspaper Sports Writing in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association's 5A/6A Emporia Regionals. Rouse began his collegiate career at Kansas State University, working for the KSU Collegian as a freelance news writer for one semester before transferring to Washburn University in the spring of 2007. Late in the semester, he joined the Review staff as an arts and entertainment freelance writer and quickly found a niche. In the fall of 2007, Rouse was named the arts and entertainment editor. That year, the Review won the prestigious Pacemaker Award, and Rouse won honorable mention awards at the KACP conference for review writing and infographics. His section, the Argo, also won an honorable mention award. The next year, Rouse received several more individual awards from the KACP, including first place for sports column writing, second place for review writing and honorable mention for feature photography. In 2010, Rouse won third place awards for special section design for the Argo and copy editing at KACP during his tenure as the Washburn Review's sports editor. The Washburn Review Online, where Rouse also served as assistant web editor, was also nominated for the prestigious Pacemaker Award. Rouse served in public relations roles with the Dick Vitale Comes to Washburn committee as Media Director and in the Mass Media Banquet planning committee, where he helped sell a record-breaking 144 tickets as a member of the publicity committee. In 2010-11, Rouse was named Editor-in-Chief of The Washburn Review Online, and he helped it reach more readers than ever before. He received multiple awards yet again at the KACP conference, including First Place for Individual On-Line Newspaper coverage, Second Place for News Photography, Second Place for Interior Page design, Third Place for Sports Feature Writing and Honorable Mention for both Sports News Writing and Yearbook Sports Season Writing. In 2011-12, Rouse was a copy editor for the first semester and was asked to take over the role of sports editor again during the second semester after the prior editor stepped down. He also was the Kaw Yearbook Photo Editor for the entire year. Rouse graduated from Washburn in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media, with emphases in media writing & publishing and public relations, and has been working at the Topeka Capital-Journal since August of that year. He began working part time in the sports department and was promoted to full-time copy editor for the news and sports sections in October 2012. He also designs the popular Outdoor page every Sunday and works on the C-J's websites, including CJOnline.com, Food + Flicks, Splash! and Holy Ground. |
